I ought to write more about PINCHER MARTIN, but it's so long since I read it. It is a great book, surely Golding's best; ending (refreshingly for a sometimes religiose author) sober nihilism. The final page says it all: "He didn't even have time to kick off his seaboots". When Golding received his Nobel Prize, some mealy-mouthed member of the Committee questioned whether he'd deserved it. And yes, there are a few books of Golding's in which the overlaid subtexts or floundering or seeming lack of focus might be thought to justify those doubts. But not here! If you wonder where modern literature thinks it's going, here is a masterpiece you must read.
